The Guard is a jiu jitsu-based self-defense course, for beginners. In Jiu Jitsu, “the guard” refers to a position when one is on their back and their opponent is in between their legs, on top.
To the common onlooker, the person in guard seems to be in danger; however, for one trained in Jiu Jitsu, this is an advantageous position. This course teaches survivors and potential victims of sexual assault how to defend themselves in the event of a potentially dangerous situation.
The Guard stresses “finesse over force,” enabling even the weakest students to disorient a stronger, would-be assailant; thereby, instilling confidence in students and enabling them to reclaim a sense of security and self-reliance.
